German Apple Fritters - Apfelküchle
Apfelküchle (apple fritters) are a popular German pastry, mainly in the state of Baden Württemberg. They are sliced apples dipped into a thick pancake mix, and dusted with cinnamon sugar. Very easily made and incredibly delicious for breakfast or afternoon tea.
If you like apples and pancakes this will be a new favourite for sure!
Ingredients
Serves 2 people
2 apples
100 g flour
80 ml milk (ideally whole milk)
1 egg and 1 egg yolk
50 g sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
vegetable oil
Method
Peel 2 apples and use an apple corer to remove the core. Cut the apples into thin slices.
Combine 25 g sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon in a small bowl. Set aside for later.
Add 100 g flour, 25 g sugar, 80 ml milk, 1 egg, and 1 egg yolk to a mixing bowl and mix using a hand mixer until a thick, even dough comes together.
Heat a frying pan to medium-high heat then add 2 tbsp vegetable oil.
Dip the apple slices into the dough so they are fully covered. Then, fry them from each side for 1-2 minutes until golden brown.
Place apple fritters on a kitchen towel for the excess oil to be absorbed.
Dip apple fritters into the cinnamon-sugar mix before serving.
Guten Appetit! (“Enjoy your meal” in German)
