Mulled Wine - Glühwein

Mulledwine.jpg

Mulled wine is such a winter treat, whether on a Christmas market to warm up, on a ski hut whilst enjoying the view or during Sunday roast with family and friends. This is a bulletproof recipe for an incredibly flavourful mulled wine which is not too sweet. Make sure to use organic none-waxed oranges and lemons as the peel will be cooking with the wine for that great flavour.

Ingredients

For 10 glasses

  • 2 bottles of red wine

  • 500 ml orange juice

  • 1 orange (plus optionally another orange for garnish)

  • 1 lemon

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • 4 aniseed

  • 6 cloves

  • 4 cardamom pods (or 1 tsp cardamom powder)

  • 6 tbsp sugar

Method

  1. Cut 1 organic orange into slices and peel the skin off 1 lemon.

  2. In a large saucepan, pour in 2 bottles red wine, 500 ml orange juice, 1 cinnamon stick, 4 aniseed, 6 cloves and 4 cardamom pods and let simmer on low heat for at least 15 minutes. The wine should not be boiling at any point.

  1. Stir in 6 tbsp sugar and let simmer for another 5 minutes.

  2. Serve warm in heatproof mugs. You can add a slice of fresh orange to each glass to add extra flavour.

Enjoy!
